Forestry and Land Scotland has appointed a new head of Plant and Seed Supply
Bryony Hewetson-Ward is now leading the FLS team at Newton Nursery, near Elgin as they work to bring the new, £26 million state-of-the-art nursery re-development fully on line.
Bryony said:
“I'm excited to be taking on the role of Head of Plant and Seed Supply; it’s a privilege to build on the strong foundations laid by Alan (Duncan) , who has led the team with dedication for over 30 years.
“With our newly redeveloped nursery infrastructure now in place, my focus over the next couple of years will be on supporting the team to adapt to new ways of working and strengthening how we work together.
“By keeping people and productivity at the heart of what we do, I’m confident we can continue to deliver lasting value for sustainable forestry in Scotland.”
The tree nursery grows saplings for the sustainable timber industry, supports new woodland creation projects, and helps to protect native species like Scots pine and wild apples for future generations.
The controlled environment within the new 12,000m² glasshouse will allow FLS to increase tree production from 7 million to around 25 million trees a year
Newton is the last of the tree nurseries originally established by the Forestry Commission. Established in 1931, Newton benefited from the combination of a rich, fertile soil and a dry, sunny ‘micro-climate’ and has grown an estimated 300 million trees.
